This post is for Cee’s Black and White Challenge. This week’s theme is flowers. This post was going to go up last night. I had a photograph (the first dahlia shot above) all ready to go. Then I thought I’d have a wander around the garden and see if there was anything else that might … More Cee’s Black and White Challenge: Flowers
Transfixed in disgusted fascination, you can’t help but watch as the grotesque figure dances. It twists and turns, bows and leaps in a skin-crawling parody of life. The eyes stare, a piercing gaze filled with eerie intent. Boring deep into your mind it sets its strings to your psyche. Dance, puppet. Dance. This post is … More Weekly Photo Challenge: Creepy
Last week I visited Warwick Castle, a beautiful fortress on the banks of the River Avon. It was a beautiful day, both weather-wise and as it was spent in the company of my parents and my nephew. Many of you may know my mum, Millie Thom, as she also blogs and we take part in … More Warwick Castle
This post is for Cardinal Guzman’s monthly blogging event The Changing Seasons. He asks that you post a gallery of between 10 and 20 photos for each month, all taken in an area near to you. Over the course of the year we’ll get to see the landscape changing. The area that I’ve chosen to focus on … More Monthly Photo Challenge: The Changing Seasons #8 July

I’ve been considering using this set of pictures in a post for a while now. With one of them being used for this week’s FFfAWs prompt, I thought It was about time I shared them all. These pictures were taken last summer at the Castlerigg stone circle in Cumbrian Lake District in the UK. The circle was constructed in … More Inspirational Castlerigg

It’s been a while since I’ve managed to put together a gallery of pictures showing the plants and flowers growing in my little corner of the world – summer weekends for a children’s entertainer are a little busy! I have, however, been taking pictures quite regularly so I thought it was about time to share them … More New Growth – July
This is in response to the Weekly Photo Challenge: Close-up. To have a look at the other entries go here. I know I’m a little late with this – there’s probably a new theme up by now! – but I didn’t think I was going to post anything until I went out for a walk … More Weekly Photo Challenge: Close-Up
It’s time for the final week of Robyn’s One-Four Challenge for July. This week’s image was not an easy one to produce – I had absolutely no idea what to do with it! At one point I had several different versions on the go, none of which I was happy with. In the end I decided I wanted … More One-Four Challenge: July Week Four
It’s not often that I get the urge to take photographs of vehicles or people. Generally, as a rule, I like to capture images of either the natural world or historical buildings and things. Today, however, the lanes around the village were full of tractors, trundling back and forth with trailers full of manure (not the … More Street Photography Countryside Style!
It’s time for week three of Robyn’s One-Four Challenge for July. For this week’s edit I began with last week’s black and white image and using Photoshop Elements 13 added a pen and ink filter. I shifted the levels slightly to bring out more detail in the boat but then found I was left with a very … More One-Four Challenge: July Week Three
The Lady of the Ossington Stairs creak, footsteps of a ghostly presence creeping ever closer. She watches through the veil as workmen transform her dream into her direst nightmare. As alcohol swirls in glasses, voices rising in drunken excitement, her ire grows. This was not what she wanted! How dare they defy her will? Fury crackles … More Cee’s Black and White Challenge: Older Than 50 Years
It’s time for week two of Robyn’s One-Four Challenge for July. For this second edit I decided to go black and white. I began by opening the week one edit in Photoshop where I removed the filter from the sky and the adjustment levels, keeping the crop and clean up. I then added a black and white gradient map. … More One-Four Challenge: July Week Two
After a long week of no internet I’m finally back on my blog. Yay! My connection is still very dodgy so I apologise in advance if I suddenly vanish again. It’s a hazard of living in a small village. I had intended to post last night but no such luck. My plan is to visit everyone’s blogs over the … More One-Four Challenge: July Week One
Unfortunately we currently have absolutely no internet in the village so I’m afraid I’m going to be absent from my blog for most of this week. I’m only able to post this one by visiting a local restaurant that has free wi-fi. Luckily I’d already prepared a gallery of pictures ready to post! We’ve been told … More New Growth – June
It’s the fourth week of June and so time for the final edit of this month’s image for Robyn’s One-Four Challenge. The picture was taken last year in Hartsholme Country Park in Lincoln, UK. For this final edit I wanted to create a dreamy effect. I began by opening the original image in Photoshop Elements 13 where I cropped it … More One-Four Challenge: June Week Four
The roses in the garden are now fully in bloom so I thought I’d share a few pictures of them. I adore roses. Their blooming is always a sign that summer has arrived, even if the weather doesn’t necessarily agree. I’d just like to apologise to anyone whose blog I haven’t managed to visit recently or whose comment … More Roses
Here’s the third June edit for Robyn’s One-Four Challenge. The picture was taken last year in Hartsholme Country Park in Lincoln, UK. For this week’s edit I decided to give it the appearance of dusk. I’m not sure exactly what I did to reach this final stage – I added and removed so many layers I’m afraid I lost track. There were … More One-Four Challenge: June Week Three
Here’s the second June edit for Robyn’s One-Four Challenge. The picture was taken last year in Hartsholme Country Park in Lincoln, UK. This week I decided to create an old photograph effect to emphasise the age and history of the boathouse in the picture (built in 1881). I’m ignoring the fact that the bridge is only a year old… … More One-Four Challenge: June Week Two

Its now June and so time for a new image for Robyn’s One-Four Challenge. For this first week I wanted to keep the edit quite simple. I cropped it and used the clone tool to remove the remaining branches in the top right corner. I then used the levels adjustment tool to boost the shadows and highlights, added a … More One-Four Challenge: June Week One – Boathouse and Bridge
The threat of rain is a familiar annoyance as you walk beneath glowering skies: it does little to deter your enthusiasm. Your eyes remain fixed on the small boats that sway gently in place. Excitement burbles in your chest. The noises of the town fade into a distant murmur and you tune your ears to … More Which Way – The Waterfront
Here’s my May, week four edit for Robyn’s One-Four Challenge. I spent most of this week playing around with an idea for this edit that I just could not get to work! I wanted to add a bright light coming through the crack in the door. Unfortunately I eventually had to abandon it as beyond my current … More One-Four Challenge: May Week Four – The Lock
I thought I’d share another gallery of the flowers blooming around the garden and village with you today. The daffodils, tulips and fruit tree blossom of previous weeks are now all gone and we move on to lots of purple and pink flowers. We have alliums, aqualegia, clematis, irises and – newly opened over the last … More New Growth
Here’s my May, week three edit for Robyn’s One-Four Challenge. I wasn’t really sure what to do with this week’s edit so I spent quite along time just playing around, seeing what I liked. Because of this there were a number of changes that I’m not entirely certain of. Eventually I decided that I wanted to focus … More One-Four Challenge: May Week Three – The Lock
You gaze upon the sun-kissed waters from the shoreline’s shaded nook, bare toes caressed by liquid chill. One by one you gather each angry thought, each nagging frustration that claws at mind and spirit, and you cast them into the depths. With a heart embracing serenity, you let the water wash away all cares. This is … More Cee’s Black and White Challenge: Liquids
Here’s my May, week two edit for Robyn’s One-Four Challenge. For this week’s edit I decided to use a really close crop, shifting the focus away from the lock itself to the looping connections of the hasp and staple. I then added a black and white gradient map and fiddled around with the settings until the … More One-Four Challenge: May Week Two – The Lock

I had planned to write a short story today but then I noticed the cacti around our house were flowering and became a little distracted by photographing them. I thought I’d share a few of the better pictures here. My family have always kept cacti. When I was a child my dad had a greenhouse full of them, though … More Cactus Crazy
After having April off from Robyn’s One-Four Challenge, I’m back with my entry for week one of May. It took me quite a long time to decide which image I wanted to use for this month – even though I thought I knew until I actually started editing. Five or so pictures later I finally land on this … More One-Four Challenge: May Week One – The Lock
Whilst fashions change and technology takes flight on wings of wonder, still men and women continue to gather, summoned by the haunting cry of the train’s whistle. Eyes wide, captivated by the remembrance of a simpler time; ashes are brushed off shoulders, as darker truths are brushed from minds. This is my entry into Cee’s Black and … More Cee’s Black and White Challenge: Signs
I was out taking photos of views and flowers around the village when this colourful lad on a motobike whizzed past me. I few years ago that would have been me, until I traded in for a car. I don’t miss riding down these lanes in the middle of winter. This is in response to … More Weekly Photo Challenge: Motion
I thought I’d share some pictures I’ve taken around the garden and village over the past week. A lot has been happening, growth-wise. At the beginning of the week the fruit trees in the garden were still in bud. As the days have passed they’ve all come fully into bloom. As you’ll see, I’ve taken lots of … More More New Growth

We have a bit of a tulip explosion going on in our garden at the moment. It’s quite a glorious sight. This is mainly thanks to my brother who likes to visit Amsterdam and always brings back tulip bulbs – we now have a lot of different varieties! I hope you like them.
Kicking at the stones that lie in your way, you walk the lane as it winds between freshly ploughed fields. The path is worn and uneven from the passage of countless feet, rutted and torn by tractors and cars. Bricks line the way, providing a modicum of stability – but even they are crumbling. Today I foolishly went out for a walk without my camera. I only wanted to stretch my legs and get a breath of fresh air before getting back to my writing, but I soon regretted leaving it behind.
