One-Four Challenge: October Week One

It’s now October and so time for a new image for Robyn’s One-Four Challenge. I took this image just last week when out for a walk around the village. I’ve always found graveyards fascinating places to walk around – I always wonder about the stories of the people buried there.

Here’s my first edit:

Week One Edit

For this first edit I’ve done very little, just a few tweaks. I quite liked how washed out the original appeared to be, with the bright light streaming through the gravestones, and I wanted to heighten this effect. To do so I opened it in Camera Raw where I made these changes:

Temperature +2
Highlights -14
Shadows -100
Blacks -35
Clarity +20
Vibrance -16
Saturation -12
Luminance 25
Luminance Detail 55

I then opened it in Photoshop where I reduced the dark splodge at the base of the gravestone on the left – I felt it was a little distracting – and gave the image a slight trim.

Here’s the original image for comparison:

  1. The spider web really makes this image 🙂 I like wandering around old cemetaries too, I always try and stop and take photos, they have wonderful stories to tell.

    1. They’re fascinating places! There was a large cemetery not far from where we lived growing up and we’d often go for walks there because it was one of the few places away from traffic. My brothers would play in the trees at the edge of the place but I’d wander among the gravestones and make up stories about the people buried there. I’m glad you like the picture. 🙂 Thanks for visiting.

    1. I might be… 🙂 One of the things I’d like to try in at least one edit this month is layering images one on top of another, adding extra elements to the picture. So far, unfortunately, I’ve not really worked out how to do it using the software I have!

    1. Thank you. 🙂 I’m glad you like it.
I’m afraid my comments never seem to work on blogspot so I’ll have to leave my response to your edits here… It’s a lovely image. Your week one edit has given it a great boost of vibrancy whilst week two’s monochrome with the coloured area works perfectly with the quote. 🙂 Nicely done.

  2. I’m fascinated by cemeteries too, although l’ve never thought to make up stories about the people. I think for me it’s just the feel of history and times past. This sunlit version has such a happy feel.

  3. Ah this is going to be a fun on for Halloween I suspect 😛
Love the lighter feel and the beautiful bokeh! Quite a juxtaposition with the gravestones.
I’m off to see whats next 😀
