The Holly King

Day 186 of 365 Days Wild was cold and drizzly outside, so I decided to spend some time finishing off my latest felt and embroidery piece: the Holly King of Midwinter.

I actually started this piece a couple of days ago, straight after finishing my holly tree decoration. I wrote about the Celtic figure of the Holly King in last week’s Spirit of the Holly post, so I thought that capturing his likeness in felt and embroidery would be the perfect next project.

I had originally planned for him to be a small tree decoration. He ended up being far larger than that, so, rather than trimming off the white felt from around him as I’d intended, I stitched two channeis for holding some dowling rods and then plaited some embroidery threads to create a hanging loop. I finished it off by adding some beads and bells to the ends of these threads to give it a more festive feel.

That’s all for today. Have you been inspired by nature ti create anything recently? Why not let me know in the comments below?

    1. Thank you, Derrick! My creativity tends to be drawn in all sorts of different directions these days, though photography is always a constant. I’ve really enjoyed turning my hand to felting this year, so I’m glad you like the results. 😊
