Saturday Songsters – The Killers

It’s  Saturday and so time for another of my Saturday Songsters posts. This week’s track is ‘Mr Brightside’ by The Killers.

The Killers are an American rock band formed in Las Vegas in the early 2000s who quickly rose to fame with their ’80s style synth-pop. They’ve since won four NME Awards (2005, 2008, 2009, 2013) and one Brit Award (2006) for “Best International Artist” and an MTV Europe Music Award (2006) for “Best Rock Group”. The group consists of Brandon Flowers (lead vocals, keyboard), Dave Keuning (guitar, backing vocals), Mark Stoermer (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. (drums, percussion).

Mr. Brightside is one of four singles from their first album, ‘Hot Fuss’, released in 2004. It was the first of their tracks that I heard and it immediately caught my attention. Their sound and their sense of style has always appealed. I hope you all enjoy the music.

Mr. Brightside

Coming out of my cage
And I’ve been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss

Now I’m falling asleep
And she’s calling a cab
While he’s having a smoke
And she’s taking a drag
Now they’re going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it’s all in my head
But she’s touching his chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, letting me go

I just can’t look its killing me
And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it’s just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
Cause I’m Mr. Brightside

I’m coming out of my cage
And I’ve been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss

Now I’m falling asleep
And she’s calling a cab
While he’s having a smoke
And she’s taking a drag
Now they’re going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it’s all in my head
But she’s touching his chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, letting me go

‘Cause I just can’t look its killing me
And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibi
But it’s just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
‘Cause I’m Mr Brightside
I never
I never
I never
I never

  1. I haven’t really paid much attention to The Killers after ‘Hot Fuss’, but I still love Mr. Brighside. And the video is on my all time favourites list 🙂

    1. Some of my favourite tracks are actually off ‘Sam’s Town’ and ‘Day and Age’ but ‘Mr Brightside’ was the song that started me listening so it will always be up there in my top 10! The video has a very ‘Moulin Rouge’ feel to it that I’ve always loved. 🙂

    1. The Killers are an interesting band who’ve made some great tracks over the last decade. Even my mum likes them – and there’s a lot of my music collection that she doesn’t appreciate!
