Is the first an old oil lamp? Still working on the second pic…

Maybe the second pic is a fireplace tool… something to grasp the logs with?

I’ve no doubt the first one is a paraffin lamp, but the second one has me stumped.

You’re right on the first one. The second is a picture of our hearth tidy with its fireplace tools. 🙂

I thought it was a hearth tool, but what was throwing me off was the appearance of strap attachment extending to the right.

You’re right on the first one but not the second, I’m afraid. Its some fireplace tools – a claw for grabbing coal and part of a brush. 🙂

I reckon an oil lamp and the second one is some sort of exciting medieval torture device 🙂 Or maybe a back scratcher or something to use in a coal fire.

You’re right with the oil lamp and you got there in the end with the second picture – its a shot of part of a hearth tidy with a number of fireplace tools. The star shape is a claw for grabbing hot coals. It would probably make an effective torture device, though, and I’ll have to remember it next time I’m in need of a back scratcher!

I agree with the others about the first photo but the second photo has me stumped.

You’re right with the first one. It is an old oil lamp. The second one is what we’ve always called a hearth tidy – a collection of fireplace tools. The star shape is part of a claw for picking up hot coals.
