“Ssh,” he soothed. “It’s all right now. Everything’s fine.”
Her shudders slowly eased as she relaxed against him. “I was so scared.”
“I know. Shh, now.” Magic effervesced beneath his fingertips as he ran his hand in calming strokes down her back, his powers reinforcing his words.
“I…” Her eyes began drifting shut, eyelashes briefly ghosting against her cheekbones before they flashed open in remembered alarm. “There’s something bad coming… Something…”
His hand continued its motion over her back. “It’s all right. There’s nothing bad coming. Just relax. Go to sleep. There’s nothing to worry about.”
Her eyes closed. Her breathing evened out.
Finally! He’d been starting to think she’d never relax.
With a pulse of power he loosened the tethers that held her soul bound into its fleshy cage. No longer guarded by conscious awareness, her soul slid easily free.
He smiled, dropping the empty body at his feet as he examined the glowing soul, so full of potential, now coalesced between his fingers. “You’ll never have anything else to worry about, at all.”

This post is for Priceless Joy’s Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers challenge. This week’s prompt was provided by Goroyboy. I haven’t joined in with this challenge – or written much in the way of flash fiction at all, in fact – for a while now, bit I couldn’t resist this prompt.
I hope you enjoyed it.
Wow! Powerful and disturbing at the same time. “eyelashes briefly ghosting against her cheekbones” one of my favorite lines in this story. My girlfriend years back called these butterfly kisses.
Peace

It seems he may not have entirely benign intentions, this soul collector. Evocative tale.

Thanks PJ. I’ve been too busy to do much of anything other than the odd photography post on my blog for a while now. Luckily, this story pretty much wrote itself. I’ve missed taking part in the FFfAW challenge every week!

Nicely written. Now I wonder, what does he do with all those souls?

Thanks, Russell. I’m glad you liked it. 🙂 Souls are powerful things. I’m sure he can put them to all sorts of unpleasant uses.

Wallie thinks this story is very scary! What a disturbing twist…we both enjoyed it a lot (although Wallie is refusing to go to sleep now. Silly imp.).
