It’s a few days later than I’d intended, but here’s my September post for Cardinal Guzman’s Changing Seasons photography challenge. This year I’m photographing around my favourite place – the meadow, wooded area and stream in my village on the border between Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, England. I find the place wonderfully inspiring, and I write many of my stories and poems while I’m there. I hope you all enjoy the virtual tour.

Follow the path into the little wooded area…

During September the wooded area and stream became my favourite place to spend time photographing. With the first hints of autumnal colours beginning to show, the fruits and seeds in the trees and the toadstools underfoot, the area became even more enchanting than usual.

Whilst the bright colours of the summer flowers had faded from the meadow during September, beauty could still be found amongst the sea of golden grass and seedheads that filled the area. The many small trees, paths, fences and tree stumps provided focal points for general views:

A closer look revealed intriguing shapes and forms in the seedheads, and even a last few flowers hidden in the long grass:

As well as the growing things I always like to capture pictures of the wildlife that inhabit the area. This is never quite everything that I see when I’m there – most of it moves far too quickly for me – but I  catch what I can. I was particularly pleased this month by the shot of the grey squirrel. He might be missing a part of his paw but at least he isn’t just a blur like all the others I’ve photographed!

Most of the pictures of the meadow were taken before September 22nd. On the Autumn Equinox it underwent one of its most sudden changes of the year – it was given a haircut!

  1. As I’m here enjoying virtual tour of this fairy meadow, I’m also enjoying listening song kindle my heart and you can imagine how magical it feels 🙂

    1. Thank you, Sue. They were taken at dawn – I like to get out for a dawn walk at least once a month. The light at that time of day is just gorgeous. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Aletta. It’s a wonderful place. 🙂 The dragonflies may not have been so plentiful during September but they were far easier to photograph than in July and August. When they settled it was actually long enough for me to get close enough for a picture!

    1. Thank you, Christine! I’m very glad you like them. It’s the right part of the country for Robin Hood, though I think he’d have had trouble hiding out here – our wooded area is very small! I freed the feather from the web after I took that photo. It seemed a shame to leave it trapped. 🙂

        Yes, the feather should be free! The image really intrigues me, as legend has it the webs are spun by faeries, and a feather means a sylph is near 🙂 Stunning photos!!

  10. Beautiful! I wonder what the dinky little ladder is for, and who it belongs to?
    It’s almost a shame the meadow had to get cut, but I guess if you want to be able to walk there year on year it needs to be kept under control a little bit.

    1. I think the ladder was placed there by Kate and her husband. They own the meadow, and are wanting to make over management of the wooded area and stream – which haven’t been looked after for many years now. I know they’ve already started to do little jobs in there. It was sad to see the meadow be cut back, but hopefully it’ll be back, looking even better, next year. 🙂 Thanks for visiting, Ali.

  12. I love this series – the photographs are so beautiful. My favorite is the gate with the secret surprise of two pheasants resting and chatting together. Your meadow is a magical place…so glad that you stopped to drink in the magic and share with us.

  16. Autumn is so beautiful in England and Australia. How absolutely lucky you people are, to be living admist this Nature’s Beauty OR IS IT A PART OF HEAVEN ?
    I Love the 1st Pic. Others also are equally heavenly. !!
    All I can do, is save the pics and use them as wallpaper on my mobile………….!!
