The Long Wait
She’d held his promise to write close to her heart, waiting patiently each day for the mail to arrive. Disappointment failed to dull anticipation, even as weeks accumulated into years. Someday she’d receive the missive that would allow her to rest in peace.

I imagine him sitting half a world away, broken-hearted as he spends another evening turning an envelope tinted with time and tears over and over, his gnarled fingers caressing her name above the street numbers he doesn’t know he copied incorrectly, stamped over with, “Addressee Unknown — Return to Sender”.
