Cee’s Black and White Challenge: Stone Walls

This is my entry into Cee’s Black and White Challenge. This week’s theme is Any Kind of Bricks or Stone Walls, Walks or Roads.  I had to go with my favourite types of stone walls for this – those of historical sites! The photos were all taken at either Warwick Castle or Fountains Abbey last year. My personal favourite is the first picture, purely because it shows a carving of the Green Man, a figure who I’ve been fascinated with for many years and might write a post about sometime – if my mum (Millie Thom) doesn’t beat me to it. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Sabina. 🙂 I’m glad you like the Green Man – he’s been one of my favourite figures for years. I’ve even got a half finished painting of him stored away in the attic that I will complete some day! Fountains Abbey has so many arches that I had numerous different shots to choose from. I probably spent longer choosing which one to use than I did editing them all!

  5. Stunning photos! It’s hard to choose just one… but if I had to pick, it would be the second picture. The series of rounded arches lead your eye towards the last arch which is slightly different as it is pointed. Maybe the rounded arches supported a barrel ceiling leading towards a pointed arched doorway? I don’t know, but fun to imagine!

    1. Thanks, Lynn. 🙂 I love visiting castles. I studied medieval history at university and it was visiting castles with my mum that helped to develop my fascination with the period. I’m glad you like the pictures.:D

  15. Hello, Louise. Just came from your Mom’s blog and I can’t wait to see who wins the “Green Man Post Race”. I was taken by these photos, because right now I’m working on a book that will be illustrated in black and white photos. The pictures will be of settings in the book that I’ve been taking around my home town. These are wonderful.I have a love for stone walls. We have many here in New England left over from agricultural times when they were dug up during plowing and thrown to the side to be used as boundaries in fields. Lovely to read your blog…..Clare
